I’ve always been fascinated with carnival side shows and circus freaks. There’s something in them which has always struck me as being metaphorical for the human condition. I once started writing an epic poem about a side show (it was going to be called "Professor Ramsey’s Misfit Circus"), but never finished it. The idea was that this side show would be populated by freaks who were physically deformed in ways that matched their psychological limitations. It’s not just that I’m fascinated by freaks and side shows, but I have a certain interest in all things unusual. By exploring that darker side of ourselves, we can find symbols for the lighter parts of our existence.Yes, the original freak shows were largely exploitation, but that doesn’t stop them from being exceptionally fascinating, now does it?
So, what brings this to mind, you ask? This site, of course.

Today, Harry and I went to the park and played a little soccer. You see, in three weeks, he is going to start playing in a league, and he felt that some practice would be a good idea.
First, Harry rode his bike to the park. This was a venture that consisted largely of me pulling him uphill and him pedaling his little heart out on the flat parts. After much pulling and pedaling, we arrived at the park and deposited Harry’s bike next to a park bench.
Next came the running. I was lucky enough to get a few photos of our time together before Harry informed me that I needed to put the camera away and run around with him. After all, that’s how you play soccer. We ran like madmen, with Harry taking the ball from me and then me taking it from him before starting the whole cycle all over again.
Next stop, team sports!
Although I have a kick-butt photo gallery installed, I decided to add some content from my Flickr account for a little variety. Once I redesign the theme for this site and get the Gallery integration working, I may do away with it. For now, however, it looks pretty keen.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I finally gave in. At the bottom of the page, I’ve added Google AdSense code. There’s a pretty good chance that it’ll generate all of ten cents annually for me, but I’m curious to see just how it works.
Should I decide that AdSense isn’t for me, I’ll close my account and remove the offending code. In the meantime, however, feel free to click on any of the tantalizing ads at the bottom of the page. Right now, they’re all about web design, but I’m sure if I start writing about porn, I’ll get more saucy ads.

I want to integrate lots of stuff into this site, but some of it may take time. On the list (in my head) are:
I’m sure I’ll find more stuff as I go along, but this is the short list. I’m still on the fence as to weather to add a forum, as there wasn’t much discussion that wasn’t related to articles posted on the old site.
I’m also working on understanding how WordPress themes work, using the excellent documentation available on the WordPress codex. I should have a handle on it in a few years.

Okay, I’ve got the site management software running, and a copy of Gallery has been put in place. Now I just need to (over time) make small modifications to the site over time. With WordPress, I’ll be able to integrate my 43 Things blog as well as a few other pieces of syndicated content.
Huzzah!
